This real-time walkthrough lets you follow along with a certified CDL instructor as they perform a complete pre-trip inspection from start to finish. Designed to simulate the actual test environment, you can pause and practice each section at your own pace.

The walkthrough proceeds in the exact order that examiners expect, beginning with the approach to the vehicle. The instructor demonstrates how to check for leaks under the engine and transmission, assess the vehicle for any obvious damage or lean, and ensure the area around the vehicle is safe for inspection.

Moving through the engine compartment, you will hear the instructor verbalize each check while close-up camera work shows exactly what to look for. The instructor explains proper fluid levels, how to check belt tension without a gauge, and how to inspect hoses for bulges, cracks, or soft spots. Real-world examples of acceptable versus defective components are shown throughout.

The in-cab portion of the walkthrough covers mirror adjustment based on your height and seating position, seat belt inspection, and the full gauge check. The instructor demonstrates how to test the horn, windshield wipers and washers, heater and defroster, and all indicator lights on the dashboard. The parking brake check and service brake check are performed step by step.

During the exterior walk-around, the instructor moves clockwise around the vehicle, maintaining a consistent pattern that becomes familiar through repetition. Each lighting check is demonstrated with a helper to verify proper operation of all lamps. The instructor explains what the helper should look for and how to communicate effectively during the test.

Special emphasis is placed on the air brake system checks, including the air pressure build-up test, governor cut-out test, air loss rate test, and low air pressure warning test. The instructor explains acceptable pressure ranges and time limits for each test, giving you the exact specifications that examiners check.

The trailer inspection section covers the header board, front of trailer, side of trailer, and rear of trailer, including door seals, hinges, locking mechanisms, and the DOT bumper. The tandem axle inspection shows how to check each wheel position methodically, including tires, rims, brake components, and suspension elements.

After completing the walkthrough, the instructor reviews common mistakes and provides tips for maintaining confidence during the actual test.
