Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CDL practice tests, ELDT training, getting your commercial driver's license, and how cdlstudybuddy.com helps you succeed.

Is cdlstudybuddy.com really free?

Yes. All CDL practice tests, ELDT theory courses, state CDL handbooks, and instructional videos are completely free. We are supported by advertising so we never have to charge drivers for test preparation.

How many practice questions are available?

We offer 5,000+ CDL practice test questions covering all categories: General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazmat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples, Pre-Trip Inspection, and Road Test. Questions are state-specific and updated regularly to reflect current DMV requirements.

What is ELDT training and do I need it?

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirement that went into effect February 7, 2022. All new CDL applicants must complete FMCSA-compliant theory training from a registered training provider before taking their CDL skills test. Our free ELDT theory courses satisfy this requirement, and your completion is automatically reported to the Training Provider Registry (TPR).

How do I get a CDL license — what are the steps?

The CDL process involves four main steps: (1) Get your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) by passing the written knowledge test(s) at your state DMV. (2) Complete the required FMCSA ELDT theory training (our free courses cover this). (3) Practice behind-the-wheel driving with a qualified CDL holder. (4) Pass the three-part CDL skills test: pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.

What CDL endorsements are available?

Available CDL endorsements include: Hazardous Materials / Hazmat (H) — requires TSA background check, Tanker Vehicles (N), Passenger / Bus (P), School Bus (S), and Doubles/Triples (T). Each endorsement requires passing an additional written knowledge test at your DMV. Our practice tests cover all endorsement categories.

What's the difference between a Class A, Class B, and Class C CDL?

Class A: Combination vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001+ pounds where the towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds — this is your standard tractor-trailer license. Class B: Single vehicles 26,001+ pounds towing up to 10,000 pounds — dump trucks, box trucks, buses. Class C: Vehicles under 26,001 pounds used to transport 16+ passengers (including the driver) or hazardous materials requiring placards.

Are the practice tests state-specific?

Yes. We provide CDL practice tests tailored to all 50 states and Washington D.C. While core FMCSA knowledge standards apply nationwide, each state may have unique requirements, supplemental questions, and specific testing procedures. Select your state for the most targeted preparation.

How many questions are on the real CDL written test?

The General Knowledge test is typically 50 questions — you need at least 80% (40 correct) to pass. Endorsement test lengths: Air Brakes (25 questions), Combination Vehicles (20), Hazmat (30), Tanker (20), Passenger (20), School Bus (20), Doubles/Triples (20). Some states may vary slightly — check your state DMV website for exact counts.

Absolutely. cdlstudybuddy.com is fully responsive and optimized for mobile devices, tablets, and desktops. You can even install it as a Progressive Web App (PWA) on your phone's home screen for quick access — no app store required. The PWA works offline for studying anywhere, even without internet.

How do I know the information is accurate and up-to-date?

Our content is developed and reviewed by experienced CDL instructors and former DMV examiners. We continuously monitor FMCSA regulation updates, state DMV manual revisions, and industry changes. Questions are regularly refreshed to match the latest test standards. We've been serving drivers since 2013.

Do I need to create an account?

No — you can take practice tests and access ELDT courses without creating an account. However, creating a free account lets you track your progress, save test scores, earn completion certificates, and receive course reminders. It takes less than a minute to sign up.
