A thorough understanding of every pre-trip inspection point separates passing candidates from those who fail. This detailed guide leaves no component unchecked, providing comprehensive coverage of the entire Class A inspection process.

The video begins with the approach and vehicle overview, teaching you to assess the general condition of the vehicle including obvious leaks, vehicle lean, and body damage before you even touch a component. Our instructor then guides you through the engine compartment with exceptional detail, explaining the function of each component as well as how to check it.

You will learn to identify the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, air compressor, and fuel pump — and to verify that each is securely mounted, free of leaks, and in proper working condition. The belts and hoses section shows how to check for cracks, frays, and proper tension, with demonstrations of what worn versus new components look like.

The steering and suspension inspection covers tie rods, drag links, pitman arms, steering boxes, leaf springs, coil springs, shock absorbers, and U-bolts. The instructor shows how to identify loose, cracked, or missing components and explains how each part affects vehicle handling and safety.

Brake system inspection receives extensive coverage. You will learn the difference between S-cam, disc, and wedge brake systems, and how to inspect each type. The video details how to check brake drums or rotors for cracks, how to measure brake lining thickness, and how to identify leaking wheel seals. The air brake section explains the function of brake chambers, push rods, slack adjusters, and how to check for proper adjustment.

The coupling system inspection covers the fifth wheel top plate, mounting bracket, pivot pins, locking jaws, and release arm. You will see how to verify the jaws are fully locked and the release arm is in the engaged position. The kingpin, apron, and gap checks are also demonstrated.

Lighting inspection covers all required lamps: headlights (high and low beam), turn signals (front and rear), four-way flashers, brake lights, tail lights, clearance lights, and side marker lights. The video also covers reflector and conspicuity tape requirements that are part of the FMCSA regulations.

For comprehensive CDL preparation, this detailed guide should be used alongside our free CDL practice tests. Always verify current pre-trip requirements with the FMCSA at https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ and your state's CDL handbook.
