Parallel parking on the sight side — also called driver side parallel parking — is a required backing maneuver for your CDL skills test. This video provides a clear, step-by-step approach that makes this challenging exercise manageable.
The sight side parallel park requires you to back your tractor-trailer into a space between two sets of cones or barriers on the driver's side of the vehicle. Because the dock is on your left, you have the advantage of being able to look out your window, but the length and articulation of the rig still require precise technique.
Setup positioning is the first critical factor. The instructor demonstrates the proper starting position — pulling forward past the parking space with your trailer approximately four to five feet from the near boundary and stopping when your rear axle is roughly even with the front cone of the parking space. You will see how incorrect setup distances make the maneuver much harder to complete.
The initial turn is demonstrated with detailed steering guidance. As you begin backing, you turn the steering wheel toward the dock (left in this case) to start pushing the trailer into the space. The instructor shows the "hard left" point and explains how the trailer responds to your steering input. Drone footage provides an overhead view that reveals the geometric relationship between tractor, trailer, and parking boundaries.
Tracking the trailer through the maneuver is explained with mirror-reading techniques. You need to watch your left flat mirror primarily, with periodic checks of the right convex mirror to ensure the front of the tractor does not swing into the opposite lane or boundary. The instructor shows what the trailer looks like in the mirrors at each stage.
The straightening phase is where many candidates struggle. The instructor demonstrates how to transition from turning to straightening as the trailer enters the space, using a quick right turn of the wheel to align the tractor with the trailer. You will learn to recognize when the trailer is at the right angle to begin this transition.
The final positioning involves centering in the space and ensuring the rear of the trailer does not cross the back boundary. The video shows how to judge distance from the rear cone using your mirrors and how to execute a final pull-forward adjustment if needed.
Common mistakes are covered: starting too close or too far from the near boundary, over-steering the initial turn, failing to straighten early enough, and rushing the maneuver. The instructor emphasizes maintaining a slow, controlled speed throughout — speed amplifies steering errors.
