Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CDL?

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to operate large commercial vehicles. There are three classes: Class A (combination vehicles), Class B (single vehicles over 26,000 lbs), and Class C (vehicles carrying hazardous materials or 16+ passengers).

How long does it take to get a CDL?

CDL training typically takes 3–8 weeks at a private school. You'll also need to pass the DOT physical, obtain a commercial learner's permit, and pass the skills test. The entire process usually takes 4–12 weeks.

Do I need ELDT training?

Yes. Since February 2022, the FMCSA requires Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for all first-time CDL applicants. You must complete both theory and behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider before taking your skills test.

How much does a CDL cost?

Total CDL costs range from $4,000 to $12,000 depending on your state, training path, and endorsements. Company-sponsored training can reduce this to $0 upfront in exchange for an employment commitment. See our full cost breakdown for details.
