How Long Does ELDT Training Take?

Class A, Class B, and all endorsements. Self-paced, no time limits. Here's exactly how fast you can finish — and what affects your timeline.

ELDT Theory: Self-Paced, No Time Limits

FMCSA lists estimated curriculum hours for each ELDT course, but these are not timed requirements. They're estimates of how long the material takes to cover. There's no timer running — you read, understand, and move on.

Class A CDL Theory

~10-12 hours5 units

Covers basic operation, safe procedures, advanced practices, vehicle systems, non-driving activities

Class B CDL Theory

~8-10 hours4 units

Same core topics adapted for single vehicles (straight trucks, buses)

Class B → A Upgrade

~5-6 hours2 units

Focused on combination vehicles only — you already know the basics

Hazmat Endorsement (H)

~3-4 hours2 units

Hazard classes, placarding, shipping papers, emergency response

Passenger Endorsement (P)

~2-3 hours2 units

Loading/unloading, evacuation, ADA compliance, passenger management

School Bus Endorsement (S)

~3-4 hours2 units

Behind-the-Wheel Training: The Longer Half

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) is the in-person driving component. FMCSA doesn't set a minimum hours requirement — it's proficiency-based. Your instructor certifies you when you've demonstrated all required skills.

  • Full-time CDL school: 3-6 weeks (40+ hrs/week on range and road)
  • Part-time / weekend program: 6-12 weeks
  • Company-sponsored training: 4-8 weeks (often with employment commitment)
  • Endorsement-only applicants: No BTW required — theory only

Tips to Finish Faster

  • Do theory first, online. Don't wait for a classroom — start immediately with our free courses on your phone or computer.
  • Study in focused blocks. 2-3 hours with no distractions beats 6 hours interrupted by your phone.
  • Don't stress about quizzes. You can retake them as many times as needed. The goal is understanding, not first-try perfection.
  • Combine theory with practice tests. Use our free CDL practice tests to reinforce what you're learning in ELDT.
  • Book BTW training early. Behind-the-wheel slots fill up, especially in spring/summer. Schedule yours while you're doing theory online.
