Upgrade — Class B to Class A CDL Theory
Upgrade your Class B CDL to Class A with this focused theory course on combination vehicles.
Requirements
Prerequisite: Must hold valid Class B CDL
What You'll Learn
This course focuses exclusively on what's different between Class B and Class A operation — you already know the basics. You'll study combination vehicle systems in detail: fifth wheel and kingpin assemblies, trailer brake systems, glad hand connections, and electrical couplings. You'll learn coupling and uncoupling procedures step by step, including safety checks and common mistakes to avoid. The course covers articulation dynamics — how trailers behave differently from single vehicles during turning, backing, and lane changes. You'll study combination vehicle pre-trip inspections, trailer cargo securement, and emergency procedures specific to articulated vehicles including jackknife prevention and recovery.
How the Course Works
Two focused instruction units — Combination Vehicle Systems and Advanced Operation. Each unit has multiple sections with content and quizzes. Because the course assumes you already hold a Class B CDL, it skips the general commercial driving basics and goes straight to what you need for Class A. Most students complete it in 3–7 days.
