Professional truck driving safety is built on consistent habits and thorough knowledge. This video compiles essential safety tips that experienced drivers use daily to protect themselves, their cargo, and the public.

Pre-trip safety habits are the first line of defense. The instructor emphasizes that a rushed or skipped pre-trip is the root cause of many roadside breakdowns and accidents. Key tips include: never skip the walk-around even if you are in a hurry, check tire inflation with a gauge (kicking tires is unreliable), test all lights including brake lights (use a building reflection or a stick between seat and pedal), and always check the fifth wheel jaws visually — never assume they locked just because you heard a click.

Fatigue management is one of the most critical safety topics. The instructor explains the warning signs of fatigue: difficulty focusing, frequent blinking, heavy eyelids, drifting from your lane, missing exits or traffic signs, and irritability. Tips include: get a full 7-8 hours of sleep before driving, take breaks every 2-3 hours or 150 miles, recognize that 2 PM to 4 PM and midnight to 6 AM are peak drowsy-driving risk periods, and never rely on caffeine, open windows, or loud music to overcome true fatigue.

Weather driving tips cover rain, fog, snow, ice, and high winds. For rain: reduce speed by at least one-third, increase following distance (roads are slickest in the first 30 minutes of rain when oil residue rises), and watch for hydroplaning (if it occurs, ease off the accelerator and steer straight — do not brake). For high winds: empty trailers are most susceptible to being blown over, reduce speed, and be especially alert on bridges and open plains.

Cargo securement tips are included because shifting loads cause accidents. The instructor demonstrates proper tie-down inspection (no cuts, frays, loose hooks), weight distribution awareness, and the importance of re-checking securement after the first 50 miles of a trip when cargo has settled.

Daily operational tips include: the "3-second door rule" — when opening doors at a delivery, pause three seconds before stepping out to scan for hazards, and always use three points of contact when entering or exiting the cab. The instructor also covers safe backing habits (GOAL — Get Out And Look — whenever unsure) and the importance of reporting any mechanical issue immediately.
