The 12 Steps to Your CDL

1

Confirm You Qualify

You must be at least 18 years old (21 for interstate driving), hold a valid regular driver's license, have a clean driving record, pass a DOT physical exam, and be able to read and speak English. Some states have additional requirements — check with your local DMV.

2

Get Your DOT Medical Card

Schedule a DOT physical with a certified medical examiner. You'll need to meet vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall health standards. The medical card is required before you can get your CDL permit. Bring it with you to the DMV.

3

Start ELDT Theory Training (Free Online)

Before you can take the CDL skills test, you must complete ELDT theory training from a TPR-registered provider. Start now with our free online courses — complete Class A (~31h), Class B (~22h), or endorsement-specific theory. Self-paced, no time limits. Your completion is automatically submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

4

Study for the CDL Permit Test

While completing your ELDT theory, study for your state's CDL knowledge/written test. Use our free state-specific CDL practice tests to prepare. Focus on General Knowledge first, then any endorsement categories you need (Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazmat, etc.). 25,000+ practice questions across all 50 states.

5

Get Your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)

Go to your state DMV with your regular license, DOT medical card, and proof of identity/residency. Take the CDL knowledge test(s). Passing scores vary by state (typically 80%). You'll receive your CLP — valid for 180 days in most states. You can now legally practice driving a commercial vehicle with a licensed CDL holder in the passenger seat. Note: you do NOT need ELDT completed before getting your CLP — only before the skills test.

6

Arrange Behind-the-Wheel Training

Search the FMCSA Training Provider Registry for BTW-certified providers near you. Most CDL driving schools offer programs lasting 3-6 weeks. Some trucking companies offer paid CDL training in exchange for an employment commitment. You must complete both range exercises and public road driving under instructor supervision.

7

Complete ELDT Theory + Pass Final Quizzes

Finish all remaining ELDT theory units and pass section quizzes (80% minimum). Once you pass all quizzes, your completion is submitted to the FMCSA TPR automatically. Download your certificate from your CDL Study Buddy dashboard.

8

Complete BTW Training

Practice on the training range: pre-trip inspection, straight-line backing, offset backing, parallel parking, coupling/uncoupling (Class A). Drive on public roads: urban, rural, highway, intersections, railroad crossings. Your instructor certifies you proficient when you've demonstrated all required skills.

9

Schedule Your CDL Skills Test

With ELDT Theory + BTW both completed and submitted to the TPR, schedule your CDL skills test at your state DMV or an approved third-party testing site. The DMV verifies your TPR records before allowing you to test. Bring your CLP, DOT medical card, and the same type of vehicle you tested in during BTW.

10

Pass the Three-Part CDL Test

The skills test has three parts: (1) Pre-Trip Inspection — demonstrate you can inspect the vehicle and identify safety issues, (2) Basic Controls — backing, parking, and maneuvering on a closed course, (3) Road Test — driving on public roads demonstrating safe operation. You must pass all three. If you fail one section, you can usually retest that section only.

11

Add Endorsements (Optional)

Already passed your CDL test? You can add endorsements anytime. If you need Hazmat (H), Passenger (P), or School Bus (S), complete the endorsement-specific ELDT theory course. These are theory-only — no additional BTW required. Hazmat also requires a TSA background check. Other endorsements (Tanker, Doubles/Triples) don't require ELDT — just pass the written test.

12

Get Hired

With your CDL in hand, explore job opportunities. Entry-level OTR drivers typically earn $45,000-$60,000 during their first year. Experienced drivers earn $60,000-$80,000+. Specialized haulers (tanker, hazmat, oversized) often earn more. Many companies offer sign-on bonuses, benefits, and home-time options. Your CDL opens doors across the country.
