Hazmat Endorsement (H) — Full Requirements

ELDT Theory Course

~8 hours, 2 units. Covers hazard classes, placarding, shipping papers, loading/unloading, emergency response, security awareness. Free at CDL Study Buddy.

TSA Security Threat Assessment

Required separately from ELDT. Involves fingerprinting at an approved TSA location. Fee varies by state ($85-$100 typical). Processing takes 30-60 days, so start early.

Written Knowledge Test

Hazmat-specific written test at your state DMV. Our ELDT course + free Hazmat practice tests prepare you for this.

Endorsement addition fee varies by state (typically $5-$30).

Passenger Endorsement (P) — Full Requirements

ELDT Theory Course

~6 hours, 2 units. Covers loading/unloading, emergency evacuation, passenger management, ADA compliance, standee lines, prohibited practices. Free at CDL Study Buddy.

Written Knowledge Test + Skills Test

Passenger endorsement requires both a written test and a skills test in a passenger vehicle. This is a state DMV requirement separate from ELDT.

No TSA or Background Check Required

Unlike Hazmat, the Passenger endorsement doesn't require a TSA security assessment. Some employers may run their own background checks.

School Bus Endorsement (S) — Full Requirements

Prerequisite: You must hold the Passenger (P) endorsement before adding School Bus (S).

ELDT Theory Course

~7 hours, 2 units. Covers danger zones, loading/unloading students, railroad crossing procedures, student management, emergency evacuation drills, school bus safety equipment. Free at CDL Study Buddy.

Skills Test in a School Bus

Must pass a skills test in a school bus vehicle. This is on top of the written knowledge test.

Background Check

Most states require a criminal background check for school bus drivers. This is state-mandated, not part of ELDT.

State-Specific Training

Many states mandate additional in-person school bus training beyond what ELDT requires. Check with your state DMV or school district.
