What to Expect on Your CDL Written Test

The CDL knowledge test is your first major step toward a commercial driving career. Every state administers these tests through their DMV, and the questions come directly from the CDL handbook. The test is federally standardized across all 50 states — what you study for one state applies everywhere.

The General Knowledge test is required for every CDL applicant. It covers safe driving practices, vehicle systems, cargo securement, hours of service, and federal regulations. If you're applying for a Class A CDL, you'll also take the Combination Vehicles test. If your vehicle has air brakes, add the Air Brakes test. Each endorsement — Hazmat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples — has its own written test.

Most states require an 80% passing score on each section. Our practice tests mirror the real DMV format so you walk in knowing exactly what to expect. We offer two study modes: DMV Simulator (timed, no hints — just like test day) and Learning Mode (untimed, instant feedback after every question).

How to Get the Most from CDL Practice Tests

1

Start with Learning Mode

Begin each test category in Learning Mode. Answer questions without time pressure, read every explanation, and take notes on concepts you don't fully understand. This builds foundational knowledge.

2

Read the CDL Handbook

Download your state's CDL handbook from our free handbook library. The handbook is the source material for every test question. Use it to fill in knowledge gaps your practice test results reveal.

3

Switch to DMV Simulator

Once you're consistently scoring above 80% in Learning Mode, switch to DMV Simulator. The timed format builds test-day confidence and helps you manage time pressure.

4
